Kerala’s Forts – Pallippuram Fort
One of the oldest existing European monuments in India, the Pallipuram Fort at Vypeen, Kochi, was built by the Portuguese in 1503. It is situated in the extreme northern part of the Vypeen Islands. The Catholic Church at Pallipuram is an important pilgrim centre and attracts a lot tourists, too.
According to legends, the Pallipuram Fort was captured by the Dutch in 1661. But the history of Kochi is of the stand that the Fort was sold to the State of Travancore in 1789. The Fort holds a great significance in the history of Kerala. The architecture, materials used, decoration and other facilities depict the life of a different era. The influences that have shaped Kochi are muted proofs here.
In order to reach the Pallipuram Fort, you can take the ferry service operating from Ernakulam and Fort Kochi to Vypeen. There are bus services also from Ernakulam to Vypeen and Vypeen to Pallipuram.
You can also check out the Light house near the Puthuvype Beach at Vypeen.
