Bullock carts – an old world charm
Bullock carts are not a very common sight in Kerala these days. But, in olden times, in the absence of fast cars and vehicles, these carts were the main mode of transport for people.
They were used for transporting people, to take produce to the markets, and to move things from one place to another. The bullock cart driver (let’s call him that) sits in the front part, just behind the two hoofed animals. There are carts with a top covering and ones without it, too.
These bullock carts were a status symbol and a measure of the family’s wealth. More the carts, the richer the person or the family.
Nowadays, bullock cart rides are offered to tourists and foreigners who would like to check out Kerala’s village life. Such a ride takes you through village grounds, paddy fields and rural settings. You can also have a closer look at the lifestyle of the people in that area. Bullock cart rides are a good way to relax in the evening. The light breeze, slow pace of life and a refreshing country-side ride will definitely be a memorable one for you.
