Birds Ahoy!-The oldest bird sanctuary in India
Situated about 48km from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, the Vedanthangal bird sanctuary was established in 1936. There are lots of trees and submerged trees there. Birds found here are storks, egrets, cormorants, darter, sandpipers, flamingos, pelicans, moor hens, herons, kingfishers, white ibis, spoonbills, swans and grey wagtails.
Between October and March is the best time to visit the sanctuary. A lot of migratory birds visit this place and there’s a watch tower from where you can spot them. There are picnic spots within the sanctuary. Bird safaris arranged here will allow you to watch birds and enjoy the ambience around.
It is the oldest water bird sanctuary in the country, and is spread over 30 hectares. It is around 86km from Chennai.
The small town of Padalam is close to the sanctuary. The national highway no. 45 from Chennai to Chengalpattu will take you there. There are state transport buses plying between Chennai, Tambaram and Chengalpattu. Travellers can hire a taxi from Chennai as well.
