Lake reserve in a forest – Palak Lake Reserve, Mizoram

The north-eastern area of India is almost like a self-sufficient region in itself. As it is cut away from the rest of the country, it has remained unspoilt and much unexplored. The Seven Sisters, as the seven states are known, are Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. Each of them are unique in their geography, culture, lifestyle, cuisine, language and even the dressing style.

Mizoram has plenty of forests, wildlife and nature trails. Palak Lake Reserve is one. The Palak lake is the largest in the state and is located within the Palak Wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary and the nearby forests cover just over 15sq.km and is more than 375km from Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital.

The lake reserve is a great place for bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts-water birds being the favourite. Besides birds, you can find elephants, tigers, leopards and reptiles. The town of Saiha is close by. There are small and budget hotels for tourists.

Certain parts of the lake is being developed as a water sports centre. Mizoram is accessible by bus and taxi from the other northeast states. There are flights and trains to main cities in Assam.
