Where the three meet – Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu

Picture 031

The three water bodies-Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean-come together at this place. The southernmost district of Tamil Nadu and the southernmost part of India. Kanyakumari used to be a part of Kerala’s Travancore area; it joined Tamil Nadu in 1956. And therefore, Tamil and Malayalam is spoken here.

The most famous landmark is located in the sea! Really. It is the Vivekananda Rock. Known as Sripada Parai, it means the rock blessed by feet of goddess. According to legend goddess Parvati is supposed to have meditated on top of the rock. It was visited by Vivekanada, and then on, it was named Vivekananda’s Rock. It stand out of the sea like a mighty giant. Sunsets are gorgeous here. A boat takes you from the beach to the rock.

The statue of Thiruvalluvar is another popular attraction. He was a revered poet. The place has many waterfalls, resorts, beaches and of course, shopping streets. Unlike popular belief, there are a couple of churches and mosques in Kanyakumari. St Xavier’s Church is a famous one. There are fabulous beaches in Kanyakumari. They aren’t very commercialised, and you can still find decent accommodation there. There’s also a water theme park.

Kanyakumari is very close to Trivandrum and is connected by road to Kerala and also other towns in Tamil Nadu. There are frequent trains to and from major Indian cities.
