Yup, that’s what Ponmudi means in Malayalam. It is a hill station located about 60km from Trivandrum. It is not as big and commercialised as other hill stations of Kerala like Munnar or Thekkady. Instead it is unspoilt and much unexplored.

There’s lot to see and experience in Ponmudi. The tea and spices plantations welcome you as you ride up the mountains. The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is close by; it has elephants and leopards. You can go for elephant rides at Ponmudi. Around Ponmudi you can go trekking. There’s also a deer park and a view point there. The beaches of Varkala and Kovalam are within a few miles distance.

Do not worry about accommodation as there’s a quaint government guesthouse in Ponmudi. It has rooms and cottages and a restaurant. There are hotels and resorts near Kovalam. Ponmudi is great for a weekend get-away.

There are frequent buses from Trivandrum and the nearest airport, too, is in Trivandrum.

Head to the Kadappuram Beach Resort located near the Nattika beach. You can get some great sea food dishes and Kerala cuisine at the resort’s restaurants. Here, sleep in king-size beds, wake up for a stroll on the golden beach, visit Vazhachal waterfall and of course, go for an elephant ride. The rooms and buildings are made of eco-friendly materials that are cooling to stay within.

Among entertainment options, you can visit nearby temples and performance stages where you’ll get a glimpse into traditional dances, martial arts, folk dances and Theyyam performances. Kathakali, an ancient religious art form, can be witness here, too.

How far is a summer retreat from your stressful life? If you ask, it is just far enough for less than a day’s ride. As in, a day’s ride from Bangalore. Wayanad is right on the Kerala-Karnataka border, and is only a few hours drive from Bangalore. a lot of tourists and bikers visit Wayanad for its hill stations, rivers, waterfalls and trekking routes.

It is a great way to beat stress. Just head to the hills, as they say. Wayanad has a lot of summer retreats located off Sultan Bathery, Mananthavady, Vythiri and Kuruva Dweep. One such summer haven is the Pepper Green Resorts. It is situated close to the forest reserve and the Kuruva Dweep.

You can relax and have a refreshed weekend at the resort. For those adventure-seekers, check out the trekking trails around Kartikulam and the Tholpetti Wildlife Sanctuary. There is lots to see and experience. Elephant rides, bullock cart rides, animal-spotting safaris, and much more await you. You can also cross the streams of Kabini on a bamboo raft and stay in a tree house.

If you come to Wayanad once, you’ll keep coming. That’s how attractive and naturally blessed it is.

How can you downplay the part architecture plays in the choice of a homestay?
Tourists are attracted to a place for various reasons-natural beauty, eco-tourism, leisure facilities, etc.

Depending on the tourists’ taste, his choice varies. And homestays in Kerala are maximising that opportunity. Visitors can stay in town houses, century-old plantation bungalows, farm houses, eco-lodges and in forest camps. Everyday, a new type of homestay springs up.

But no matter the kind, most tourists prefer an old, traditional house built in typical Kerala style. The high-ceiling rooms, the cool courtyards and the soothing environs, is what they’re here for. Being able to relax among the trees, go leisure boating on a nearby lake or just lazing around the paddy fields-all these attract the tourist.

The architecture, the age and the tradition associated with the homestay definitely plays a very important role in the choice of accommodation.
