This south Indian state is known for its beautiful coconut tree-lined beaches, abundant wildlife reserves, flowing rivers and calm backwaters. Kerala has a rich and prosperous history. The capital is Trivandrum, and the major cities are Cochin, Calicut, Kottayam and Thrissur. Cochin is the commercial capital, with various businesses and companies operating out of here. It was a famous trading centre for spices, silk and linen. The Arabs from the 8th century, Portuguese in 1498, the Dutch and British from 16th and 17th centuries had established trade with Kerala. As a result of the trade relations, a lot of families have settled in the state and have gelled with the local population. This gives the state a multi-hued culture and lifestyle.
