The KSRTC double-decker bus, the first bus to start service from the terminal was flagged off by Transport Minister Jose Thettayil.

Besides this, Cochin has the Vallarpadom Terminal coming up. So, too, the Kochi Metro Rail project. All these ventures will boost Kerala’s tourism potential.

After months of the sultry, sweaty, scorching heat, aren’t we all looking forward to a few months of rain? Oh, you bet!

Inconsistent smallish showers have been teasing us for a while now. Each state across India is vying for the Hottest-State-Where-Most-People-Die-Of-Heat Award. But, be of good cheer. We’ve spotted the actual South-West Monsoon in the Andaman Islands. Yay!!!

Now, isn’t that good news? Of course. Hoping that the showers will bless Kerala by the end of the month, wait all of us. Eager to be relieved of the sun’s burning heat and to relish the cool rainy days.

Monsoon tourism will get a boost, too. Tourism agents, houseboat operators, homestay and hotel owners, restaurants, and just about everyone depending on tourists are awaiting the golden showers.

President Obama has officially announced the end of recession in the US. Countries and companies that depended on the US economy, too, are relieved now. Business can go back to as usual and people are heaving a sigh of relief.

It is also a positive call for tourists to pack their bags and travel along! Tourists who have been keeping their long journeys on hold will now be able to undertake them without feeling any pinch.

Kerala, being a world-famous tourist destination, will be seeing a huge influx of tourists. And since it is the tourists season now, the tourism industry here can certainly smile!

A visitor to India is treated on the basis of the mythological concept of ‘Atithi Devo Bhavah—Guest is God. This concept represents India’s age old hospitality. The hospitality of Indians is very well known. They are friendly and kind towards visitors and welcome them irrespective of language, traditions or religion. In Kerala, most of the families live as a joint family – with cousins and relatives. They will be more than happy to welcome newer members.

An initiative by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India was started to maintain good relations with tourists and visitors to the country. It is a nation-wide campaign that aims at sensitising key stakeholders towards tourists, through a process of training and orientation. It is meant to boost tourismin India, which in turn would bolster India’s economic growth.

Apart from travel agents and hotel owners, it is also aimed at those dealing with tourists directly and indirectly, such as taxi drivers, tourist guides, operators, immigration officers and the police.

The programme is based on a verse in the Taittiriya Upanishad that goes, “Matru devo bhava, Pitru devo bhava, Acharya devo bhava, Atithi devo bhava”, meaning ‘One should worship mother, father, teacher and guests as God.’

The government’s seven-point Atithi Devo Bhavah Programme involves training and orientation for those liaising with tourists. As motivation, they also give away awards for the best worker in each segment.
